Kickstarter campaigns opened today for a pair of Switch titles. Super Mighty Power Man and Truberbrook are both looking to be funded. Super Mighty Power Man is a game we’ve covered previously. The Mega Man-inspired project is looking to raise around $60,000,. I realized that I had this totally confused with Harold Halibut, a failed Kickstarter project from this past summer that was also an adventure game with assets created by using photogrammetry on claymation models.

Truberbrook is a traditional adventure game with a sci-fi mystery, and it’s got a heck of a visual twist. Every environment in the game is built by hand using miniature models. Those models are then digitised using photogrammetry so that they can blend with the computer-rendered characters, and the diorama-style results are incredibly impressive. The game is set in rural Germany during the height of the Cold War in the late 60s. You’re an American physics student named Tannhauser who’s won a vacation to the titular town of Truberbrook. Things get strange as you meet a cast of local weirdos and dive into the town’s mysteries – the official rundown also promises dinosaurs, which is always very exciting. This all plays out in the traditional adventure game form. You point and click your way around the environments, picking up items and chatting with NPCs.
Solving puzzles means either using your inventory in creative ways, navigating challenging bits of dialogue, or pushing against more bespoke sorts of tests – you know, stuff.
'Truber-what?', you may ask. Well, imagine “Twin Peaks” meeting “The X-Files”, but in rural cold-war Germany. During the estimated gameplay length of 7 to 10 hours, the player takes the role of young American physicist Hans Tannhauser, who, while actually on a holiday, dives into the everyday life of the mysterious village of Trüberbrook – just to find out he hadn’t got there by accident. He’s here to save the world!
In order to immerse the player to the fullest, the team chose to physically build the world we envisioned, resulting an a unique, distinct visual style. All of our scenic sets are genuinely handmade. 'Handmade' as in: 'Manufactured using real hands! And fingers! Not the most efficient way of doing things, but we're loving it! Every little detail is custom built, meticulously crafted, piece by piece, painted, arranged, rearranged and put into boxes in between. If you were wondering...yes, there is glue involved. Lots of glue!'
The release is scheduled for late 2018 for Windows, Mac, Linux (all DRM free & via Steam), PlayStation®4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch in both English and German versions. The game was co-funded by the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and will be published by Headup Games.
